Recycling Your Old Jewelry

Cartier Jewellery Articles No Comments

There has been a lot of buzz lately about the economic and environmental advantages of recycling the jewelry that you no longer enjoy or which is too badly damaged to be repaired. So, we thought it might be useful to discuss the realities of recycling.

Recycling, in the strict context of this article, involves melting down an old piece of jewelry and then reusing the gold (silver, platinum) to make something new, thereby eliminating the need to mine more (gold) for the new piece. It is the exception rather than the norm for a jeweler or designer to actually melt scrap him or herself. In most instances, jewelry to be melted is accumulated until there is enough quantity to send to a refiner – a company that is in the business of ‘refining’ (melting and purifying) precious metals in relatively large lots. ‘Scrap’ from many different sources are processed together, so you never get back ‘your’ gold. The refiner reduces the ’scrap’ to the pure metal and either pays the jeweler the market value based on the estimated weight of pure (gold, etc.) in the batch, less a refining fee, or returns an equivalent amount of gold (etc.).

In a less strict sense, ‘recycling’ would include selling your unwanted jewelry for cash on eBay, or selling it or ‘trading it in’ to a jewelry store or designer for cash or in exchange for something new…similar to trading in your old car when buying a new one. (Giving it as a gift could also qualify if it was in lieu of going out and buying a new piece).

FINANCIAL CONSIDERATIONS

Before you do anything with that old jewelry, there are a number of things you should determine.

What do I have?

o Are those ‘white’ stones diamonds…or zircons, or glass?;

are the blue stones sapphires, etc.?;

o If the stones are real (precious or semi-precious), what type, size, quantity, and quality are they?;

o Is the jewelry made of silver, or gold, or platinum?; the Marking and Stamping Act of 1906 requires quality marks (purity stamps), and trademarks (the registered mark of the maker), as a ‘guarantee’ of authenticity for virtually all gold and silver jewelry made and sold in the United States;

If it’s gold, what karat is it?: 10Kt (10 parts out of 24, usually marked ‘10K’), 14Kt (marked ‘585′ or ‘14K’), or 18Kt (marked ‘750′ or ‘18K’), and some designers use even higher karat gold; (pure gold is 24K, and is almost never used for jewelry because of its softness, except in some oriental jewelry made for the Asian market as a way of ‘carrying one’s wealth’);

if it’s silver, it should be marked ‘925′ or ’sterling’ (92.5% silver) or ‘Fine’ (pure);

if it’s platinum, it will usually be marked ‘900′ or ‘950′ (depending on the percentage of platinum vs. alloy);

o Is it repairable and how much will that cost?;

o Was it designed/made by a famous maker?; in some instances, this can mean a world of difference in market value (e.g. David Webb, Cartier, Boucheron, Suzanne Belperron, etc.); the makers name and/or trademark is usually stamped on the jewelry, and can be researched online or in any good library, as well as in the jewelry sales records of major auction houses.

Your best sources for answers to most of these questions are

a) your original bill of sale, which should tell you the metal it’s made of, the types and sizes of stones the piece contains, and the total weight of each type; and

b) a well-established fine jeweler, preferably in a small-to-medium sized town or city – reputation being everything in the jewelry business, you are less likely to be taken advantage of in a small community than might be the case in a large metropolitan area where anonymity is still possible. If you are in a big city and don’t have a jewelry store that you regularly deal with, ask friends for recommendations or contact the Better Business Bureau. Also, try to speak directly with the owner. He or she may be more likely than an employee to value developing a new customer beyond a quick, single transaction.

What is my jewelry worth?

Once you have determined what you have, you should try to find out what it’s actually worth ‘at retail’. Assuming your jewelry is in saleable condition, take a look on eBay before making any decision. Check out the auction results for items similar to yours so that you’ll have an idea of how much people are actually paying. At the very least, you’ll be in a better position to negotiate if you do decide to ‘recycle’ with a designer or jewelry store.

Once You’ve Decided to Recycle

As an individual, the only practical way to recycle (other than on eBay or similar), is to ’sell’ or ‘trade-in’ your old jewelry for cash or for a new item of jewelry, with a designer or jewelry store. However, it’s important for you to remember that these people are in business to make a profit.

When you buy, you are paying not only based on the market value of the precious metal and stones, but also for design and for labor, which includes such things as casting the metal, setting the stones (which, for small stones, can be as or more expensive than the stones themselves), cleaning, soldering, polishing, etc. – all, plus a markup for overhead and profit for the maker AND for the retailer.

When you sell to a designer or jewelry store, on the other hand, you’re only likely to get ’scrap’ value unless your piece is in really good condition and still in fashion, or you are ‘trading up’ for something much more expensive. In a nutshell, this means that the price of the stones and/or gold (silver, platinum) will need to have gone up dramatically from where they were when you bought, in order to recoup anything close to what you spent originally. You will avoid feeling insulted and disappointed if your expectations are realistic.

Oh, and if you’re only getting ’scrap’ value, don’t include the stones if they are not damaged, especially if they’re small. (I can probably buy equivalent stones from my gem dealers for a fraction of what you paid for them as part of your jewelry, so why should I pay you more)? They can probably be removed from the ’scrap’ quite easily and you can incorporate them into a new design now or in the future.

The bottom line is, if you have a piece of jewelry that you no longer wear, it certainly makes financial sense to either sell it, trade it in, or repair it.

ENVIRONMENTAL CONSIDERATIONS

This is a no-brainer: though certainly simplistic, the more damaged or simply unused jewelry that we bring out of the drawer or safe deposit box and recycle, by whatever method, the fewer the new pieces that will be made and/or the less mining that will be necessary to meet the demands of the market. Not only does mining require major energy input (not that jewelry manufacturing and precious metal refining don’t also consume energy, though dramatically less on a per unit basis), but mining for precious metals is among the dirtiest and most polluting types of mining. The impact we have individually is, of course, miniscule. Cumulatively, however, it can be quite significant and since it also makes financial sense, there is precious (no pun intended) little excuse not to do it.

The day is approaching, at frightening speed, when recycling everything imaginable will not be an option…but an imperative!

Semi-Precious Stones As Birthstones

Cartier Jewellery Articles No Comments

Throughout the many years, a lot of people have regarded semi-precious stones, among the many other gemstones, to exude a beautiful exquisiteness and even a bit of magical powers. As a matter of fact, there are those who have believed that these stones carry mystical powers which could be passed on by the stones to whoever wears it.

For example, a blue sapphire could give the ability to the wearer to stay cool even under pressure. Another would be a red ruby could bestow passion to its wearer. Over the years, people started to assign specific gemstones to the zodiac signs and later on, to the months in a year. People who were born in a particular month were believed to have qualities that resemble the gemstone for that month or the “birthstone” that has been linked to that month.

And then, later on, there was some sort of confusion over which birthstones were actually associated with which month. Even today, there are months which have several birthstones that, over the years, have competed for public acceptance.

In the US, though, the American National Association of Jewelers has a list of the official birthstones for each month, which were adopted in 1912. For January, it was the Garnet; for February, the Amethyst; for March, Aquamarine; for April, Diamond; for May, the Emerald; for June, Pearl; for July, Ruby; for August, Peridot; for September, Sapphire; for October, Opal; for November, Yellow Topaz; and for December, Blue Topaz.

Aside from these modern birthstones, there were many other applied birthstones such as the mystical birthstones, the traditional birthstones and the ayurvedic birthstones.

The World’s Largest Diamond Was Found

Cartier Jewellery Articles No Comments

Image : http://www.flickr.com

At last, the largest diamond in the world had found a worthy contender. Under preliminary forecasts of experts the weight of the new diamond-champion is one 1.5 kg.

Before now the largest diamond in the world was the Cullinan diamond. This diamond was found in the British province Transvaal (nowadays the Republic of South Africa) in 1905. The weight of the ex-champion Cullinan is 3106 carat (621.2 gr.). The diamond was named for Sir Thomas Cullinan, who had discovered the Premier in Transvaal three years earlier. The diamond amazes not only by its size but also its cleanliness, absence of mineral inclusions, cracks, and bubbles.

The Cullinan diamond was presented to the reigning British monarch, King Edward VII, in 1907. It’s interesting that diamond represents a splinter (about 1/3 part) of larger diamond, but it haven’t found till now.

The diamond was cut into 9 large stones and about 100 smaller ones by I.J. Asscher and Company of Amsterdam. The Cullinan diamond decorates the brow of the Imperial State Crown of Great Britain about one hundred years.

Nowadays, the 7000-carat diamond (1.5 kg) was found in the same country. Under armed guard the new diamond will be delivered in Johannesburg, the capital of the Republic of South Africa, where diamond will be determined its exact weight and the size with a help of special technical equipment.

What company possesses this precious find? It is not yet announced. However, during all last century the leadership in world production of diamonds belonged to giant De Beers who supervised about 65 % of all diamond market till now.

Today the Republic of South Africa takes fifth place in extraction of rough diamonds in the world, giving place only to Australia, Botswana, Russia and Congo.

Russia also does not giving in a diamond race. So, the diamond-mining company Alrosa has a quarter of world’s diamond mining.

In the beginning of August a big deposit of rough diamonds was discovered in Yakutia. Russia’s diamond giant Alrosa has discovered a big deposit of rough diamonds in Yakutia. The worth of its reserves is estimated at $3.5 billion. The deposit of such extent was last discovered in Yakutia ten years ago.

The new Verkhne-Munskoe deposit unites three kimberlite pipes located 130 kilometers from Udachninsky Mining and Processing Plant of Alrosa. The deposit is forecasted to last for 25 years, yielding from 1.2 million tons to 2 million tons of stones.

In terms of geological survey, Alrosa has outmatched the best indicators of former Soviet Union, the company announced in the news release of April 2007. Nowadays, for instance, Alrosa is setting up the 4th exploration expedition in the northern part of Yakutia’s diamond province.

It is mentioned that Russia had became the first country in volume of export of rough diamonds in 2005. To tell the truth, the Russian Federation had taken the top position only by physical volume of the diamonds taken out abroad. The leader in the finance of export had become the Botswana (25 % of world’s diamond export). It is supposed that in 2007 Russia will increase considerably in turnover because of the opening of new diamond fields.

Women and Their Diamonds

Cartier Jewellery Articles No Comments

My favorite jewelry pieces are: a wide eternity wedding band filled with diamonds, a heart -shaped diamond pendant, a large ring filled with pearls & diamonds, a tennis bracelet and a pair of princess-cut diamond earrings! Each one of these treasures was a gift from the love of my life – my husband of almost 40 years. As I evaluate why this diamond jewelry is so precious to me, I discover that it goes far deeper than the beauty of these pieces or the cost. However, the beauty is definitely something to consider. Diamonds are beautiful! Beauty inspires. Beauty excites. Beauty motivates. Beauty arouses the senses. Diamonds are not particularly useful other than beautiful adornments; thus, the cost of diamond jewelry is a consideration to seriously take into account. As you know, diamonds can be expensive. Each piece of diamond jewelry, that I own, represents a huge sacrifice from my lover just so he could delight me. He takes great pleasure in bringing me joy.

When trying to determine why diamonds mean so much to most girls, ladies, women, I can’t help but think that it has to do with “attaching worth” from the lover to his beloved. When worn, diamonds are symbols that shout, “I am loved. I am treasured. I am precious. I have value.” Diamonds make the beloved feel like a princess. Of course each person is of great worth – as a unique creation of God. Sometimes, however, it’s just nice to be reminded of how special we are! Diamonds are classic and elegant and are not worn carelessly. Diamonds adorn the deeply loved one and are positioned for the greatest dramatization when getting dressed. The sparkle and luster of diamonds are dazzling, stunning and difficult to not notice – which is the point. The beloved (whether she’s a daughter, granddaughter, girlfriend, wife or mom) wants everyone to know that she is highly esteemed.

Purchasing diamond jewelry is not for the faint of heart. Because it represents a sizeable investment (not only of money, but it generally signifies a dedication of time to his beloved), he researches the 5Cs of diamonds: carat, color, clarity, cut and cost. He imagines how the shape of the diamond(s) will look on her. So many choices: round, asscher, cushion (or pillow), emerald, heart, marquise, oval, pear, princess, radiant. What kind of jewelry should he give? Should he choose a ring, bracelet, watch, brooch, earrings or necklace? Which would she enjoy more? What setting would be best? Yellow gold, white gold or platinum? The Journey jewelry is very popular right now. The diamonds are set in graduated sizes, expressing the progress of the relationship along with the twists and turns in the meandering journey of love. How romantic is that?

When considering the purchase of a diamond necklace or pendant for your loved one…or for yourself, you will want to take into account the length that will be most appealing. The most common are: collar length, (12″-13″), choker length (14″-16″), the princess length (17″-19″), the matinee length (20″-24″), the opera length (28″-34″) or the rope or lariat length (38″-40″).

There is no greater pleasure in life than to love and be loved in return. While diamonds are just things, a diamond represents a timeless treasure – one that can be passed from one generation to the next with the greatest gift of love. A diamond exemplifies value – a commitment to appreciate in worth. A diamond is cherished for its eternal beauty. When you consider a gift for the one you love, first give of yourself, then give a diamond to represent your undying adoration.

Amber Jewellery – Jewellery For the New Trend

Cartier Jewellery Articles No Comments

There are many gemstones which are used in the making of jewellery. Gemstones add extra beauty to the jewellery and give a completely unique look to the person wearing them. Amber is one such gemstone used in the manufacture of jewellery. What makes it completely different from other gemstones is that they are not originated from the minerals. Amber is regarded as Northern Gold as it is very precious and people who have them are considered to very lucky as well as rich. Thus during the transportation of amber gemstones there is always a very high security. Because they are not found much nowadays, they are very expensive.

Amber is a gemstone which is used for the purpose of safety in some of the countries. It is being used since many years by the amulets and talismans as a means of safety for the person wearing it. Also in some countries like India, necklaces made of amber gemstones are given to children so as to keep them away from any kidnapping. In many places it is used in healing techniques as it produces electrical energy when rubbed along a cloth. It is also considered as an effective gemstone for removing all the complications in the relationships and hence making the relationships even stronger. So amber can be gifted on occasion such as father’s day or mother’s day or any such events related to your family.

There is certain jewellery made from Amber gemstones such as Lily amber pendants. It is made of pure silver and amber stone. This is called lily pendant because it is given a shape of lily. It is measured up to 4.5 cm lengthwise. Often these pendants are worn along with the matching bracelets or earrings. The cost of this pendant is around 18.95 dollars. Another such product made from in the amber jewellery is sterling and amber bracelet which is also made up of pure silver and contains amber stones. The length of these pendants is about 16.5 cm and approximate cost is about 38.95 dollars. They are also worn along with matching earrings and pendants. Since they are also given a shape of lily, they are also referred to as yet another lily pendant.

Most of the amber gemstones are used along with the silver jewellery but nowadays even gold is used along with the amber gemstones to provide a complete different look.

Where And How To Get Rings Engraved

Cartier Jewellery Articles No Comments

Much of this depends on the sort of rings you want and what sort of engraving you want. My first suggestion is to find the rings (plain bands perhaps?) you like. When you go to the jewelry store, ask if they do engraving. Ask if they do “inside ring engraving” if that is what you want. Engraving on the outside is another option. Ask what kind of engraving service they offer. Very few will offer “hand engraving”, that is, the sort of deeper and fancier work done when each letter or symbol is cut by hand using a tool called a graver.

At the store I used to work with, the engraver there was only one of 4 who did that old fashioned craftsmanship in my state. As for pricing, hand engraving might be $120 when machine work might be only $20 or so. Machine engraving is often charged by the letter after a minimum charge is met.

To find the rings, you simply have to shop around. I suggest 14k as the minimum. This quality of gold is durable, much better overall than 10k and less expensive than 18k. If for some reason you prefer sterling silver, keep in mind that silver will wear more quickly and be more difficult to keep shiny and polished. Silver will also tarnish for some people.

Other kinds of jewelry you might see at lower prices are gold filled and gold plated. Also, there is something called vermeil. Gold filled is made like a coin, such as a “quarter 24 cents” and a look at the side of a quarter will explain it all. See the shiny surface of the coin? Look at the edge and you will see a darker, coppery colored layer. Gold filled is a layer of gold on top of another metal. The under layer is a brass like metal and it will tarnish. Once the ring wears through the gold layer, there is nothing to do but trash it. It cannot be salvaged.

Gold plated is brass like metal with an even thinner gold layer. Think costume jewelry for this. Vermeil is sterling silver with very thin gold plating on the surface. Vermeil cannot be repaired or resized since any work will remove the very thin gold layer and what is left is a sterling silver ring with no gold color.

Sterling is a lower cost approach than 14k gold but the rings cannot be sized if the ring has an “anti tarnish” coating like rhodium plating. Plain sterling is best if you choose this good looking “but subject to regular cleaning” metal. That is up to you! Ask before purchasing sterling if the ring has a plated surface like rhodium. If the clerk has no idea what you are talking about, you might try somewhere else.

Your question is general and I can give only general directions. But I do have an idea where you are coming from. Shopping for this kind of stuff is not easy if you have not done it before. These are some things to consider overall: Ask the jewelry store if they clean and examine your jewelry for free (the most basic of services). Try to get an idea of the services the store offers. Most should offer that. It costs them little to do cleaning for a customer and makes for repeat business. Ask if they back up their service (repair work). Ask if the engraving is done “in house” or is farmed out to someone else.

Actually, farming out work is not uncommon and does not mean a black mark for the jewelry store. They SHOULD have a jeweler who repairs and sizes rings working in the store. A jeweler should be on the premises, even if they farm out the engraving work. Try to get an overall impression of the store staff, looking for people who are actually interested in your business and who seem to know what they are talking about.

Generally the attitudes and knowledge of the sales people are a direct reflection of management and the approach of that store to doing business. Are they happy to have helped you even if you did NOT make a purchase? Would you go back to them? Look for clues like this and try to get a feel for the way the store treats the customer. The customer is not always right, meaning, look for honesty and clear help when you ask questions about jewelry and about any services they offer.

Ask if they do machine engraving or have access to hand work.

Machine engraving is like that done at the little shops set up in malls selling and engraving things like charms. A mechanical machine is used to duplicate the shapes of letters on master templates and scratch those shapes into the jewelry. Machine engraving is just fine and done correctly will look great and last a long time without wearing off. Hand work is different and is cut much more deeply, lasting a lifetime. Each piece of hand work will show the ability of the engraver so if you opt for that; ask to see some samples first!

As for the jewelry itself, you simply have to shop around and see the weights, thickness, etc. of the jewelry and compare prices from one place to the other. Look for a good finish on the surface of the rings. Avoid any that show little pits or marks. This might be hard to see without a very close look.

If for some chance you want white gold that is simply gold with another metal like nickel added to make the color whiter than yellow gold. The karat is more important than the color. Go for 14k to start. That is my recommendation for wear-ability and quality combined.

If you look at the much more expensive platinum, keep in mind that platinum does not keep a shine like gold does. Platinum is an excellent jewelry metal but because of the character of the metal, it does tend to get dull rather quickly. A high shine on platinum is difficult to attain and simply will not stay that highly polished as does gold (regardless of the color of the gold).

Italian Designer Jewelry

Cartier Jewellery Articles No Comments

Creating masterpieces on jewelry is child’s play for the Italian designers who spend their valuable time in sketching the designs and then applying them on the metals. Gold is said to be the frequently used metal on which their creativity speaks the language of royalty. Right from the trendy jewelries to the traditional ones, it is an Italian designer who can best mold the metals. For the women of today jewelry indeed is a concept of something funky and fashionable with the least intrusion of the bells and charms that were used as the decorative. Gold, which was once regarded as the jewelry for the D-day occasions has now turned to be a regular wear. Fashion changes color with time and the tastes of women also roll along with it. With the attempt to feed the needs of this change in fashion, designers are also storming their brains. Fashion jewelry for this matter always has an edge over the traditional and the so-called outdated ones. Italian designers have already earned the praise for their creativity right from the beginning of history and now they are just trying to modify it by producing something unique for the multi-tasking women of today.

The height of experimentation with the metals and the jewelries is carrying the designers to such an extent that they are trying to produce something exquisite by molding steel and ceramic also. They have delivered almost a mentionable change in the function and usages of the unique material that hardly had any implication in jewelry making. Coral is also often used in making designer jewelry. In fact the marriages between the coral and ceramic jewelry created by the Italian designers can look awesome and trendy on any woman irrespective of her skin color. You can get to see the sample of such an interesting piece of work with Vivace jewelry which on purchase can be shipped to the address given free of cost. These modern designers can custom make the jewelry for your make over.

They also present some of the excellent collection on the rings and bracelets that can even look attractive on the men. Fashionable jewelry that the teenagers and the office goers love to put on is mostly light and cheaper. The risk that they try to avoid while in precious jewelry items can easily be avoided when they are wearing cheap fashionable jewelry designed by the Italian designers. These designers are trying their best to show their craftsmanship through the magic effects that they can produce with the help of ceramic, coral along with other imitation metals. Color is a primary factor when ceramic jewelry is concerned. These jewelries have to be painted according to the need of the stylish women of today. Pearl can also be an excellent element to be used up as pendant. The creative brain of the designer decides the style in which it has to be inserted. The designers can use ceramic to create excellent pieces of necklace, bracelets and earrings. There is a lot of scope to experiment with the earrings as they are small and can be shaped in any way you feel like.

The best part of the Italian jewelry is that the designers posses the capacity to make any dull metal graceful, with their touch. This group of Midas is innovative in whatever metal or material they work on. Sterling silver can add a new meaning so that it can tell the untold story. Silver existed long back but moving with time is a wise decision and jewelry is just a part of such movement. Colored ornamental earrings are effective when they are hand glazed. The working women of today love to put on only that particular type of jewelry that can glorify them and make them look awesome. The Italian jewelries are also unparallel when it comes to designing of costume jewelry and vintage jewelry. It is only a sketch that produces the ultimate magic shining on the curves of women’s body. Wedding ceremonies are absolutely incomplete without the junk fusion collections with the glittering stones of increasing denominations studded on them in ascending order. Amethyst glass crystal beads are heavy and produce an elegant look when they are put on with orange or saffron apparels. They present a sense of holiness, which gets reflected on the face of the woman wearing it. The Italian Designers are also expert in creating designs on brooches.

These were used long before but with the change in style their uses have diminished and hence, the designers are trying to recreate them by giving some different forms, shapes and sizes to them. Gold items in 14 to 22 carats are light. They are simply just capable of attracting any women. They look ethnic and have the fragrance of elegance. The Italian designers have also experienced art while playing with the white gold, which is precious and unique in itself with the touch of elegance. Crystals are auspicious for they reflect the light that falls on them and also makes you glow. It is the Italian jewelry designers who can make fruitful use of the crystals.

They can use it simply by hanging beautiful crystals with the prominent edges from a chocker or can gather various colors of it to create a multi-colored crystal necklace. Leather is modified with cutter convenience to make the bracelets for the teenage boys and girls. In fact, bracelets more like the bangles can produce an exclusiveness that is desired by everyone. Body piercing jewelry can also have a major outlet in the form of the nose rings, naval rings and eyebrow rings. Though they are not of much artistic value yet to make them unique some amount of design definitely has to be inserted. Fashionable jewelries that are used in matching with the apparels are mostly made up of cheap metals, which the working women prefer the most. So, most of the Italian designer jewelries for regular use are being created on these types of imitation or easily available materials.
